Bart Zino, President of PBS Construction, partnered with Hope for Haiti to build something more than bricks and mortar.
As a team member on a week-long mission trip, through Hope for Haiti, Zino helped build a water purification system and distribution center in the remote mountain village of Baraderes.
Local residents were eager to work alongside the mission team, to dig ditches, lay piping and renovate a building. Construction supplies were sparce, but locals knew how to use every resource available.
"Construction" was nothing like you would find in the United States. The team was knocking down walls with curious children eagerly watching, and often running through the newly opened doorway. The concrete pad in the front of the house was in need of repair as well as new steps leading up to the building. A local stone mason was brought in to help craft the steps. He layered rocks and dirt until they were high enough, then the crew finished it off with mortar.
The water purification system will provide residents with 1,000 gallons of clean water per day, which will reduce the incidents of typhoid and other diseases caused by contaminancs in the water supply.
