LOCATION: Palomino Road, Fort Myers
OWNER: Diocese of Venice
ARCHITECT: Victor Latavish, AIA
DESCRIPTION:
The project included the construction of a 34,000 square-foot main church building, a 4,000 square-foot administration building, a landmark cross tower, a dedicated mechanical plant, as well as site and parking improvements. Victor Latavish, AIA, designed the church based on the liturgical requirements of the Vatican II. It is modern in both form and function, featuring 54-foot high acoustical wood ceilings, ceramic tile flooring with marble accents, oak trim and matching pews, a state-of-the-art 42-speaker stereophonic sound system, a solid granite altar that weighs over 5,500 pounds, and more than 200 stained glass windows.
The campus landmark is a 100-foot tall cross tower. At the top of the tower, a 20-foot cross is a beacon that can be seen as parishioners approach from Daniels Parkway. The tower was built with a steel infrastructure to stand up to Florida’s strict wind codes and then wrapped in an aluminum skin. It sits just between the Chapel and the site of the future Parish Center.
