Is your home weather ready?

Outsmart Florida’s elements with PBS Construction

Summer is the time that many people think about hurricane-proofing theirhomes, but in Southwest Florida we have extreme weather to consideryear-round. If you have just moved into your home, or have been livingthere for years, you should pay close attention to preventative maintenanceprojects that pay for themselves over and over.

When the temperatures rise, don’t lose your “cool.”

Did you know that as much as 50% of your electric bill is spent on air conditioning? Below are some common areas where homeowners unknowingly let the heat in and the money out:

Drafty Windows

If you feel a draft, it is definitely time to re-caulk your windows. Caulking wears down with exposure to the elements and may need to be replaced on a yearly basis.

If your windows were installed prior to 2000, you may want to consider replacing them with impact resistant windows that offer extra insulation as well as protection from wind storms and break-ins.

Improve your Insulation

In older homes, increased insulation can save you as much as20-30% on your energy bill. While no one can stuff the familiar“pink stuff” down an existing wall, there are fiberglass, celluloseand foam spray-in options.

Faulty AC Unit

All air conditioning units use ducts to deliver and remove air.In the event a duct is damaged, you will have an extremely uncomfortable situation on your hands. Check for air loss leakages, improper insulation, and poorly connected ducts to prevent issues.
